On Thursday, the mainstream media proudly proclaimed that former President Barack Obama had re-entered the political arena, campaigning for the Democratic gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia who are struggling to keep black voters energized.

In New Jersey, Obama challenged voters to reject the “old politics of division … that dates back centuries” – or perhaps just the 2012 or 2016 election for those of us who are actually keeping track.

Article after article commented on how rare it was that the former president has spoken publicly about politics since President Trump took office, which begs the question: Have they fallen asleep at the wheel?

In May, Obama made several not-so-subtle swipes at the current president as he accepted the annual Profile in Courage award in Boston, calling on Americans to “stand up to hate.”

Immediately after President Trump confirmed he would pull America out of the Paris climate accord in June, Obama accused him of “rejecting the future.”

That same month, Obama delivered a critical speech about President Trump’s “America First” doctrine to an audience of 6,000 in Canada, suggesting that Trump’s policies were unleashing the forces of “isolationism, nationalism [and] rolling back the rights of others.” He continued saying that the U.S. “looks inward” at its own risk.

In September, after the Trump administration announced the end of Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the former president slammed the action as a purely “political decision” and noted that the action is “contrary to our spirit, and to common sense.”

The list goes on, but the point is it didn’t take long for President Obama to start making the rounds after leaving the White House. He hasn’t kept the precedent set by those before him, but instead has consistently tried to undermine the current president, whether it’s on race relations, climate issues, or his resistance to globalism.

The news that Obama has begun campaigning for candidates should not be shocking. Realizing that their boring candidates are floundering in the Trump era, Democrats have recruited President Obama as their last hope for victory prior to the mid-term elections. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are just not cutting it.
