South Park takes on protestors, ‘tiki torches, and confederate flags’ in Season 21 premiere [VIDEO]

On Wednesday, Matt Stone and Trey Parker come back for South Park’s 21st season to take on the white supremacists, KKK, and neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia in August protesting the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue.
According to the first episode’s (“White People Renovating Houses”) description, “protestors armed with tiki torches and confederate flags take to the streets of South Park. Randy comes to grips with what it means to be white in today’s society.”
The violence in Charlottesville ended tragically after white supremacist James Alex Fields used his car to plow into a crowd of protesters, killing 35-year-old Heather Heyer. President Donald Trump’s response to the violence was roundly condemned, and now it might be getting the South Park treatment. That is, if Stone and Parker want to continue to revolve the show around the 45th President.
Stone and Parker anxiously tried to get away from focusing their show on Trump, saying earlier this year, “We fell into the same trap that ‘Saturday Night Live’ fell into, where it was like, Dude, we’re just becoming CNN now. We’re becoming: ‘Tune in to see what we’re going to say about Trump.’ Matt and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow.”
Since Stone and Parker were completely certain that Hillary Clinton was going to win the 2016 election, they had a game plan. But it was entirely messed up during the election that they had to scrap Wednesday night’s episode on Tuesday night because of the results.
“Last year was such a headf-ck, and we were so happy when it was done,” Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. “And we just wanted to go back to the kids, which we still do. But it’s also like, you can’t avoid [Mr. Garrison as Trump]. So, we are not actively putting it in, but we are not actively leaving it out. It’s the world we live in.”
In the first 18 seasons of the show, each episode contained its own story. Now, they serialize the show so that one episode teases to the next one.
“Last season we really tried to do a serialized thing, and it was just really hard,” Stone said. “In some ways it was cool and in some ways it trapped us. The way we do that show is not compatible with full serialization. We’re going to do the first show (this season) and maybe don’t have to sitcom wrap it up at the end.”
