Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., center, calls for gun control legislation June 16, 2016, on Capitol Hill in Washington, in the wake of the mass shooting at an Orlando LGBT nightclub. From left are Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.; and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. (J. Scott Applewhite / AP)

The calls from liberals for more gun control following the horrific shooting in Las Vegas that left 59 dead and 527 injured, but many of them don’t realize that the unintended consequences of such policies actually criminalize blacks and poor people the most.

According to Adam Bates, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute’s Project on Criminal Justice, believes that it might not be malicious on the part of liberals, but it’s a reality that they’ll have to deal with if more firearms become outlawed.

“I think a lot of people on the left are unaware of the disparate impact that gun control penalties has on communities of color,” Bates told Red Alert Politics. “People on the left rightly point out that drug prohibition falls disproportionately on communities of color, but nearly half of the people in federal prison on gun charges are black.”

He continued to say that similar to drug laws, gun laws will only make things worse. “Like drug prohibition, gun prohibition penalties have traditionally fallen hardest on the most vulnerable communities in American society, and our friends on the left would do well to remember that.”

However, if more liberals knew about the harsh consequences that black and poor people would face that they would still be in favor of such policies, it’s more of a wash.

“I know that when the Obama Administration attempted to use terrorism watchlists, which unfairly target the Muslim community, to deny people the right to own guns, some Democrats like Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan spoke out against the unjust targeting,” Bates explained. “Regardless of which side people on the left take in the gun debate, they should at least familiarize themselves with the data around who will suffer under these laws. Good policy is the product of an educated, logical process that respects the facts. Bad policy is doing what feels right without regard for the impact it has.”
