Netflix abruptly ends ‘House of Cards’ as Kevin Spacey is implicated in scandal

Netflix’s popular series “House of Cards” demonstrates that power can corrupt. The hit show will end next year after six seasons due to sexual assault allegations against star actor Kevin Spacey, who plays the show’s main character Frank Underwood – a man who goes from Congressional leadership to the White House through suspicious means.

According to a joint statement by Netflix and Media Rights Capital, “[We] are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey.”

“In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported,” the statement continued. “As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

In an interview with BuzzFeed News published Sunday night, actor Anthony Rapp accused then-26-year-old Spacey of making sexual advances on him when he was 14 years-old in 1986. Spacey invited Rapp to his apartment where he picked Rapp up and put him on his bed and climbed on him. Rapp is openly gay.

In a Twitter post on Monday, Spacey issued an apology to Rapp and came out as gay.

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor,” he wrote. “I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago.”

“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey added.

“House of Cards,” which is filmed in the Greater Washington and Baltimore area, is about Underwood, a South Carolina Democratic representative and House Majority Whip, extracting revenge for being passed over to be Secretary of State. Along with his wife, Claire (played by Robin Wright), Underwood goes from Vice President to President through manipulation, merciless pragmatism, and power.

Ironically, sexual relationships are part of the hit show. (Spoiler alerts) In season one, Underwood has a sexual relationship with political reporter Zoe Barnes (played by Kate Mara) and feeds her damaging stories regarding his political rivals to sway public opinion. In the following season, Underwood lures her to a Metro station and pushes her in front of an oncoming train, unseen by security cameras and witnesses. Other plots revolve around Frank’s youthful gay relationship with a fellow student at a military college, Claire reliving being sexually assaulted by a high-ranking officer of the United States Marine Corps, and the awkward dynamics of Frank and Claire’s open relationship.

It is yet to be seen how the series will wrap up.
