This October is a particularly spooky month in history. Besides the annual celebration of Halloween, two landmark events in the ignominious history of communism – or as it is more fashionably known these days among many millennials, 21st-century socialism – are happening. First, this October marks 100 years since the Russian revolution under Lenin, which brought on the totalitarian darkness that established the Soviet Union. Secondly, 50 years ago this month, Argentine Marxist revolutionary and Fidel Castro lieutenant Che Guevara died. With Che Guevara’s death, the capitalist sensation that is his eponymous t-shirt was born.

On Tuesday night, no doubt, in many a bar across America, a heck of a lot of millennials will be dressed up as ghouls, goblins, ghosts, and a whole assortment of other frightening characters and creatures. That said, I’m willing to bet that more than a few smart-alec leftists will walk into a party with a grin as they sport a t-shirt with Che Guevara’s face, and perhaps, a beret on their heads. This “costume” will seem to those who wear it and like it to be “edgy” and “thoughtful.” However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Che Guevara was a man who, when in a position of power in Cuba, advocated for the murder of many. He called them “executions” but did away with the legal necessity of evidence ahead of such killings under Cuba’s new judicial system of communist rule, according to Cuban-American journalist Humberto Fontova, who has written at length about the communist icon.

It could be said that Che was also the ultimate foreign election meddler. Guevara had no need for consultants or social media, as he used guns to put himself in a position of power in a country far from his own. While Guevara is often associated with Cuba, he himself was born in Argentina. This is another fact that many Che t-shirt enthusiasts probably do not know despite the way they will assuredly espouse the “virtues” of socialism at a party this evening.

That’s the other sad thing about the people that will be wearing Che Guevara t-shirts and berets this evening. Undoubtedly, many will claim they do so because they “love America,” and believe that a Republican victory this past November meant somehow, in their warped and uninformed view, that the country had become fascist.

Here’s the truth though: Guevara hated the United States of America and perhaps more crucially to such pompous virtue signalers, he undoubtedly hates them for being American. Guevara once said, “We will bring the war to the imperialist enemies’ very home, to his places of work and recreation. We must never give him a minute of peace or tranquility. This is a total war to the death.” The “imperialist” he is referring to there is the very Che t-shirt owner.

Surely, many a Che-lover will – between sips of craft-brewed pumpkin beer – talk about how they’re frightened of a nuclear confrontation with North Korea because of President Trump, without acknowledging that this current problem has festered for decades under presidents of both parties. What the aforementioned wannabe revolutionaries probably won’t know is that Che had this to say about nuclear weapons and the U.S., shortly after the Cuban missile crisis: “If the nuclear missiles had remained, we would have used them against the very heart of America, including New York City…We will march the path of victory even if it costs millions of atomic victims…We must keep our hatred alive and fan it to paroxysm.”

Yes, that’s Che talking about nuking New York City. But hey, enjoy that pumpkin cider because who knows what Kim Jong-un or President Trump will do tomorrow?

Here’s one final point. While we shouldn’t support ignorance of what Che stood for and dedicated his life to, everyone should support the right to wear that Che Guevara Halloween costume this evening. Free speech is a sacred right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution; ignorance is not. Just know you may hear all of the aforementioned from someone else at a party tonight and when that happens, you have the right to explain some historical facts to them.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
